El Gouna Hospital

Living in El Gouna for five years I have used everything! As I am a property owner I pay Egyptian rates but with my annual tourist visa I would pay tourist rates if I go to a hospital outside. It costs LE45 to see a dentist, optician or doctor or 45 Euros if you are a tourist.

The first time I visited the dentist he did a check and clean and I had to return for further cleaning because my gums were bleeding too much. All this for LE45! Fillings I think were LE170. I have had two crowns replaced on my two front upper teeth. They cost LE800 each. They have to send them off to Cairo to be made and OK it took three attempts to get them to fit and returning them to Cairo for adjustments but they are fine. The temporary crowns were better than my old ones!

The optician also did an eye test for LE45 and gave me a new perscription. I think the new lenses were LE270 in non-scratcheable plastic? When I first had them done I know they were LE280 for the frames and glass.

I often go for check ups at the hospital because everything is there and so easy. The laboratory for blood tests, etc., gyneacologist, ultra sounds, x-ray, etc. You pay extra for each item but it is not expensive (as a resident).

We did have someone come to the hopsital to try and sell an insurance package. Unfortunately the sales presentation didn't leave me with any confidence. A lot of people come here to retire but they didn't cover anyone over 60 and had to come back with a special price :D The maximum limit on the insurance cover was LE150,000 per year and the General Manager of the hospital assured us that this would cover everything including brain surgery as prices in Egypt are so cheap. However, this amount did not cover a tourist falling off a ladder recently! I know the hospitals claim a huge amount from the insurance companies and the insurance companies reject the claims until they reduce the amount. This insurance package also covered many other hospitals all over Egypt and in my experience there is a price for a foreigner and price for an Egyptian and at Borg Laboratories in Cairo I can only pay foreigner prices so I bet they would not accept this card and miss out on the high prices.

We also get specialists coming every month or so from Cairo to the El Gouna hospital. I saw the skin specialist which cost LE110.

I was also interested in doing the RAST Food Allergy test. In the UK I believe they can test about 200 food items with a blood sample. I tried to find out how to have this done in Egypt and they do this test at Borg Laboratories in Cairo for I think it was LE370. The results then appear online after a few days. Well they only tested nine foods. One of which was cod. Anyone seen a cod in the Red Sea? One of which was celery! The usual cow's milk, hens eggs but rye flour not wheat?!, pistacheos, hazlenuts and prawns. The results are either positive or negative no scale. Waste of time and money really.

And a lot of ladies here are taking advantage of the cheap prices for cosmetic surgery having face lifts, brow lifts, tummy tucks, botox, breast implants, etc. No horror stories yet

Hi Georgina

Thanks for all the info. Is it only property owners in El Gouna that get the cheaper rates?

No, I think Europeans who are working in Hurghada with a residents visa also get these rates. I know some of the yachties who are wintering here in the marina get them too.

Having my appendix removed in Hurghada

A wee story for you all.

Last Monday I had a niggling pain on the right hand side of my abdomen and just put it down to trapped wind and a very heavy weekend. By Tuesday afternoon it hadn't moved location and was slowly getting worse, so when my husband got home from work I asked him to take me up to the Nile hospital, just to have it checked out.

I was taken straight in to a cubicle to be examined and I didn't like the look on the doctors face and when I asked what she thought it was she calmly replied 'It's probably just your appendix and I'll get the surgeon to look at it'

Alarm bells started going off in my head; I'm 5000 miles from home and they are talking about surgery.

The surgeon examined me and asked for a blood test and ultra-sound. By this stage my husband was also starting to get worried; every time someone examined me or took blood, he got ushered down to reception to pay.

As I left my room to go for the ultra-sound my husband said to me 'If this is just wind I'll kill you' I just laughed.

After the ultra-sound they started getting me ready for surgery. The nurse came in and handed me a gown and told me to take all my jewelery off and contact lenses out. My husbands face was a picture. He asked the nurse why and she replied 'Just a precaution'

About 30 mins later the surgeon came round and confirmed that I had appendicitis and they would be removing it straight away.

They finished preparing me and wheeled me of to the theatre. From entering the hospital to going to theatre was just over 3 hours.

The theatre was spotless and really modern looking. All the staff where excellent and tried their best to help me relax; which wasn't easy. The op took about 90 minutes and it turned out that my appendix had just started to rupture, the surgeon showed my husband the appendix in a jar and he said it looked like a red gherkin with pussey green stuff on the end. Lovely.

As you would expect I was very sore after the operation but the nursing staff where excellent and they enjoyed practising their English with me.

I was released on Thursday afternoon but the nurse wouldn't let me out of the room until the bill had been settled. My husband had already paid 1500le and had brought 2000le with him but needed another 800le which was in the apartment. Under no circumstances was I getting out of that room until he came back with my passport in hand. At first I thought that it was very expensive but once I saw the break down of the costs its wasn't expensive at all. 4300le for an operation and two night stay (plus plenty of drugs),the doctors fees and tests.

I'm at home now, recovering slowly. They said it'll take 4-6 weeks. No dog walking or housework for a while for me.

All in all the Nile Hospital is an excellent very modern hospital.

Hi Lyndsey - good to hear from you and I hope you are resting? The care at the hospital seems really good but glad that you are now safely back home! You must rest up, especially with the housework - get hubby to help!!!!! speak soon!
P.S. was it only cash they would accept or could hubby have paid by credit card?
