Interesting!!! According to a recent article in the Telegraph, an agreement was signed in Jan 2004 between Spain and Morocco to develop two tunnels of 39km that will link Morocco to Spain and therefore Europe. The part of the construction project located under the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar wil start in 2008.

The rail tunnel, based on the Channel Tunnel between England and France, will be 1,300 ft beneath sea level at its deepest point. The Spanish mouth of the tunnel will be at Punta Palomas (about 27 miles west of Gibraltar),while the Moroccan end will be at Punta Malabata near Tangier.

The full cost is not yet known, but both countries hope it will be financed by the European Union.
