PRESS RELEASE
Sept 10th 2008 saw the presentation of the Action Plan for the Oeste region and the signing of the accord between the government (namely the Ministry for Public Works, Transport and Communications) and the 16 councils in the Oeste area (covering 500,000 inhabitants).
This programme runs from 2009 until 2017, covering over a dozen projects costing a total of over E2.1 bn.
Trains
Main projects are the upgrading of the Oeste train line between Lisbon and Figueira da Foz, and the construction of a new train line between Santarem and Caldas da Rainha. The latter will link the two existing parallel train lines (Norte and Oeste) and enable the Rio Maior train station to receive TGV (high speed) trains.
Roads
The main projects are a new road, the IC9, which will link Nazare and Tomar, and the IC11, which will open up links between the coast and the interior/greater Lisbon area.
Hospitals
A new hospital, the Oeste Norte hospital, will be built, and the Centro Hospitalar in Torres Vedras will be substantially updated, significantly upgrading the health care facilities in the region.
Environment and energy
A regional Agency for Energy and the Environment will be set up to help the local councils make intelligent use of energy and to better manage the region’s natural resources.
Security and police force
Arruda dos Vinhos will have a new GNR police station and five new GNR posts will be built in Lourinha, Sobral de Monte Agraco, Alcobaca, Azambuja and Alenquer. There will be a new PSP police station in Cartaxo.
