Property sector in the north ‘rotten to the core’
Published on August 2, 2012
A TURKISH Cypriot contractor has filed a lawsuit against Turkey at Larnaca District Court for selling him stolen land in the north, it was reported yesterday.
According to Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen, Cafer Gurcafer, businessman and chairman of the Turkish Cypriot building contractors association filed the lawsuit against Turkey to shake up the “rotten” property regime in the occupied areas.
Gurcafer told the paper that his aim is the collapse of the established regime in the north.
“I believe that by filing a lawsuit I will shake the foundation of the property regime in north Cyprus which is rotten to the core,” he was quoted.
The contractor said he believed he could win the case against Turkey after which he plans to go to a European country asking for implementation of the decision.
Gurcafer claimed he bought the Mimoza Hotel in occupied Famagusta for the agreed price of £1,260,000 Sterling of which he had paid £1,242,000 and was preparing to pay the rest when the hotel was taken urgently from his hands by the ‘providence fund’ of the breakaway regime, which confiscated moveable property inside the hotel.
According to Yeni Duzen, Gurcafer is seeking £15 million in compensation from Turkey. He told the paper that the situation in the north has reached the point where businessmen come from Turkey and are offered valuable land for free.
At the same time, Turkish Cypriot businessmen give money to buy land and pay 30-50 per cent on top of the loan they take and are kicked out the door if they don’t pay even a small amount pending.
"This is part of a mentality that wants to eradicate the Turkish Cypriots,” he said, adding that those who support this system are also putting obstacles towards the solution of the Cyprus problem.
